Diary, 1787.

The diary covers the period of Mathews' journey from Quebec to Niagara and Detroit in 1787. He travelled to rejoin his regiment which was threatened by Indian attack. The daily entries concern details of his travels, description of the various forts and frontier settlements he visited, and commentary upon the political atmosphere regarding treatment of the Indians in this region as well as military frontier post operations.

This is a typescript of a diary kept by R. Mathews. In an explanatory note, James Bain, Jr. (1842-1908) has attributed the diary to Major R. Mathews, 53rd Regiment of the British Army, and Aide-de-Camp to Lord Dorchester, Sir Guy Carleton (1724-1808), who was governor of Quebec, Canada at the time. From the description of Diary, 1787.
