Diary, 1857.

This three volume diary is the day-by-day record of Hallam's voyage to Europe from June to December, 1857. His travelling companions were Rev. John Townsend and his brother, Edward Townsend. Hallam visited many major European cities and entries contain vivid and detailed descriptions of well-known tourist attractions, including many cathedrals and churches. He always includes his personal reactions to what he has seen. Also included are details such as transportation between cities and hotels stayed in. Vol. I begins June 10 in New York and ends August 21 in Southampton, England; Vol. II begins Aug. 22 in Havre and ends Oct. 23 in Trieste; Vol. III begins October 24 in Venice and ends Dec. 2 in Southampton. At the end of Vol. III Hallam includes a conclusion, written after his return to the United States.

Robert Alexander Hallam (1807-1877) was born and died in New London, Conn. He graduated from Yale in 1827 and from the General Theological Seminary in New York in 1832. He was Rector of St. Andrew's Church, Meriden, Conn., for two years, and Rector of St. James's Church, New London, Conn., from 1835 to 1877.
