Papers pertaining to the Province of Carolina, mostly during the administration of Governor John Archdale and including many of his letters. Thhe collection concerns the enticing of German colonists into the province; the establishment of the Church of England and the issue of religious freedom and its association with office-holding and representation; conditions in the American colonies; dissension in the Carolinas; rights and privileges of aliens; mistreatment of the Indians; and sales of land. Included are a speech by Gov. Archdale to the assembly and various commissions; a description of North Carolina and St. Augustine, Fla.; a marriage license for a member of the Archdale family; petitions in behalf of the French settlers; patent grants; maps of the Charleston, S.C., settlement and of the eastern North Carolina seaboard; and a copy of Culpeper's draft of the Ashley River.
