The journal of Samuel Stillman Parker, only child of Dr. Augustus G. and Mary Ann (Hazen) Parker of Shirley. Mass., was written during 1839 to 1840 while he was a student at Groton Academy. He wrote about the social, academic, and intellectual life of Shirley, Groton, and other towns of northwestern Middlesex County, Mass.

William Miller (1782-1849) is the American farmer and Baptist preacher who proclaimed the imminent return of Christ in the 1830's and 1840's and founded the religious movement known as the Millerite Movement.
