Civil War letters largely consisting of directions to Thompson's wife concerning the operation of their farm. There are also comments on living conditions in the field and on a few skirmishes in the area around Chattanooga, Knoxville and Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; near Vicksburg, Miss., 1863; and later near Dalton, Ga. One letter, from a friend near Richmond, Va., describes battles there.
