Papers. 1881-1966.

The collection includes the correspondence file, drafts, and other material pertaining to Murray's Historical and Biographical Encyclopedia of the Colored Race ..., a small group of papers reflecting his other personal and professional activities, and a group of Murray family papers. The correspondence dates from 1893 to 1925, and is largely incoming. Of special interest are the hundreds of biographical sketches of notable Afro-Americans written by Murray or his wife, Anna, during the years 1895-1930. Clippings, photos, notes, programs, articles, reviews, bibliographies, and miscellaneous materials complete the collection. Murray was responsible for assembling an exhibit of books and pamphlets for the 1900 Paris Exposition when he was employed at the Library of Congress. His subsequent status as a bibliographer and historian may be traced to that activity.
