The collection includes legal documents pertaining to the court case of Margaret Aurelia Porter, of Maryland, who charged Reuben Reynolds of Pennsylvania with harboring three slave boys, Cesar, George, and Emanuel, to whom she held legal title. Documents include warrant, subpoenas, judicial opinions on the state of fugitive slaves, and depositions. The case was handled by Jared Ingersoll and presented before the Honorable John Marshall, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, 1801-1835. Other names in the collection include David Caldwell, Clerk of Circuit Court; Betty Clark, mother of the boys; Samuel Kedman, William Lewis, William Master, and David Wood, legal counsel for witnesses, and Stephen Porter, father of the plaintiff.
