The Robson company appears to have been one of many new firms established in Charleston, South Carolina following the Civil War. They were located at 136 East Bay and 1 and 2 Atlantic Wharf. The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder.
