Correspondence concerning the fate of Russel's son, Cabot Jackson Russel (d. 1863), captain in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first Afro-American regiments in the U.S. Army, after the Union assault on Fort Wagner, S.C., July 18, 1863. Letters discuss rumors of Cabot Russel's capture and death, the battle of Fort Wagner, the Afro-American regiments and attitudes of southerns and northerners toward it, George B. McClellan, and the exchange of prisoners. Also included are three letters of Cabot Russel while vacationing in New England in 1856 and 1859; and two personal letters to him from his aunt, Ellen Jackson.
