Contains approx. 44 chapters (some missing) of a carbon-copy typescript manuscript plus handwritten drafts and other notes on the history of Port Republic, Va. Written in the 1930's, this history begins with a chapter on the land and the Indians with subsequent chapters describing the establishment of the town and its growth. There is information on farming (incl. references to the invention of the notched sickle used on the McCormick reaper); river navigation, and industry/businesses (incl. information on the tannery, flour mills, and foundry). Schooling and information on church revivals (ex. Methodist) are also mentioned. Several chapters are devoted to the Civil War and include detailed accounts of Stonewall Jackson's victory at the battle of Port Republic. Also discussed are Port Republic citizens involved in wars up through World War I. (Cont.) There are several chapters on various individuals and families, including the Carthrae, Burgess, Harper, Kemper, Harnsberger, Trout, Scott, Downs, and Madden families. Other individuals mentioned include Zachariah Raines, Shenandoah River navigation pilot, and George W. Eustler, local slave trader. Information on graveyards and other miscellaneous materials (ex. an 1863 letter from a Confederate soldier) are also included.
