Thomas H. Arthur Papers, 1921-1982.

Contains documents relating to Dr. Thomas H. Arthur's book on actor Melvyn Douglas, written by Dr. Arthur, a member of the James Madison University faculty. The book, entitled "See you at the movies: the autobiography of Melvyn Douglas," was published in 1986 (Lanham, Md. : University Press of America). The letter series is composed of letters written to Douglas and others (incl. Robert Redford) in regard to information which Arthur needed to complete his book. In addition, this series has one folder of miscellaneous letters to or from Douglas (one from Redford), on a variety of subjects. This series also includes information outlining Douglas' visit to James Madison University in December of 1974. (Cont.) The notes and manuscripts series includes Douglas' outline (handwritten) on acting; handwritten notes for the book; and Arthur's typescript manuscripts (incl. a paper on "The film actor in politics: Some early rumblings." The series on Programs from early performances includes programs from the Playmongers, the Rialto Theatre, New Grand, Orpheum, and Fischer's Majestic Theaters. The series on photographs contains over 60 photographs used for the book.
