Mainly personal letters exchanged between Tompkins and his wife Mary (Gapen) Tompkins, during their engagement and marriage, relating to Tompkins' medical education at Rush Medical College, his work as a surgeon for the 17th and 55th regiment of the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War, his wife's career as a teacher in Rushville, Ill., her work in establishing a private school in Lewiston, Ill., their marriage, medical care of soldiers during the Civil War, and politics and life in southern Illinois during the war.
