Letters and papers of Sir George Leonard Staunton and of his son, George Thomas Staunton, author and expert on China. Papers of the elder Staunton consist mainly of family letters, with a few items relating to his diplomatic career. Papers of George Thomas Staunton include letters and diary accounts relating mainly to his journey with his father and Earl Macartney on the first British mission to China in 1792-1794, his second voyage to China as head of a mission in 1816, his residence in China, 1816-1817, as a member of the East India Company's factory at Canton and Macao, and his career in the in the House of Commons in the 1830s with considerable information on the elections of 1832 and 1835. Travel journals of the younger Staunton record trips in England, Scotland, and the continent in the 1790s and 1826-1827, and 1830.
