The material relates to family and business matters, Thomas Jefferson's interest in the ratification of the U.S. Constitution by North Carolina, Rutledge's marriage to Sarah Motte Smith, the education of their children, land purchases and speculation, and political conditions in Sweden. The journals of Rutledge's trip to Europe contain travel directions prepared for him by Thomas Jefferson, and include information on political conditions in France, descriptions of the British Parliament and of England, France, and Italy, and impressions of prominent Frenchmen.
