Barnes Manuscripts, 1833-1925.

This is a miscellaneous collection obtained from the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library. There is no relation between the various items in the collection other than that they are all from Indiana. The collection is in three categories: 1. general correspondence, 2. legal correspondence, and 3. county legal forms. The general correspondence is partly composed of family letters: Charles J. Finney while in school; Frank Morris while teaching in Miami County; and letters from Carrie E. Thomas to her mother. The remainder is business correspondence, the largest part being the papers of D.D. Dykeman of Logansport, a state senator and judge. The legal correspondence is mainly among legal firms and include the papers of W.W. Orr of Muncie from 1878 to 1906. Letters to Orlando A. Somers shows the patronage system in action regarding the postmastership in Kokomo. The legal forms, arranged alphabetically by county, are largely warranty deeds, with the addition of some mortgages, bonds, title abstracts, memos of agreement, and estate inventories. These make up over half of the collection.
