Gehring was born in Baden, Germany, where he was a brick maker. He immigrated to the United States in 1852 where he worked as a brick maker in Cincinnati, and Ripley and Decatur Counties, Indiana, before moving to Oldenburg, Indiana around 1857 where he established a brick factory.
