Hospital founded in 1855 as Indianapolis City Hospital. Name changed to Indianapolis General Hospital in 1947, Marion County General Hospital in 1959, and Wishard Memorial Hospital in 1972. Sunnyside Sanatorium, an outgrowth of the pulmonary department of City Hospital, began in 1917 near Oaklandon, east of Indianapolis, and discontinued operations in 1969. Founded in 1876 as a group of women who took flowers to patients at Indianapolis City Hospital. Over the years the mission took on a number of projects, including founding a boys' home (1879); a nursing school (1883); Eleanor Hospital (1895) for children; and a tuberculosis hospital (1936).
