John Winsmith Papers. 1822-1833.

The John Winsmith Papers, 1822-1833, consist of 36 items in three folders documenting his medical education and military service. Included in the materials is an inaugural essay on metastasis written for the University of Pennsylvania, 1825; a receipt for fee for license to practice medicine in South Carolina from the Columbia Board of Health, Daniel H. Trezevant, Treasurer, 1824; a group of receipts and bills for clothing, room and board, textbooks, and miscellany, 1822-1825; 26 cards of admittance to medical lectures at University of Pennsylvania, 1822-1824; an oration delivered July 3, 1830; and a commission as major in South Carolina Militia, 1833.

John Winsmith was born John Winn Smith on January 13, 1802 near Glenn Springs, South Carolina. He attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1822 to 1825. Upon his return to S.C., he practiced medicine in Spartanburg and Union Districts. An act of the South Carolina Legislature changed his name from John Winn Smith to John Winsmith. A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
