Personal and business papers of Emmerson and his family concerning the sale of timber to the U.S. Navy, 1830s; the administration of schools in Franklin County, N.C.; the operations of the Confederate commissary department in western Virginia and life in Portsmouth, Va., during the occupation by Federal troops, 1864. Correspondents include John Cabell Breckinridge, William Eggleston, and William H. Smith. Also included are a volume concerning Trinity Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and a volume of brother John Emmerson's business records from the 1860s.

John Cabell Breckinridge (January 16, 1821 – May 17, 1875) was an American lawyer, politician, and soldier. He represented Kentucky in both houses of Congress and became the 14th and youngest-ever vice president of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861. He was a member of the Democratic Party, and served in the U.S. Senate during the outbreak of the American Civil War, but was expelled after joining the Confederate Army.
