The papers of Richard Stoddert Ewell, general in the Confederate Army, include a letter concerning his defenses of Richmond in 1864; a voucher for rations for his staff; a letter, 1862, from Stonewall Jackson commenting on the battle of Cedar Mountain; a note, 1863, concerning the beginning of the retreat of the Army of Northern Virginia from Carlisle, Pa., toward Gettysburg; and a letter book giving an interesting account of the maneuvers of the Army of Northern Virginia, especially the attacks on the north side of the James River, September 29, 1864.

The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America's Eastern Theater. Organized on June 20, 1861, as the Army of the Potomac, it soon incorporated the armies of the Shenandoah, Harpers Ferry, and the Northwest. James Barron Hope was born 23 March 1829 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the grandson of Commodore James Barron (1769-1851) and son of Wilton Hope and Jane Armistead (Barron) Hope (1791-1862). James Barron Hope graduated from the College of William and Mary. He practiced law and was the commonwealth's attorney for Norfolk. He married Annie Beverley Whiting (1825-1920) in 1857.
