Family and legal papers of Metcalf family of Bellingham, Mass., in particular those of John Metcalf, surveyor; his son, Stephen (1731-1800), surveyor, Justice of the Peace, and jurist; and his grandson Stephen (1773-1844), selectman of Bellingham. The papers relate to the history, politics and lands of Bellingham and surrounding towns and contain John Metcalf's notebooks with records of his surveys, geographic coordinates, and land title research; plans and surveys of both John and Stephen; and deeds to land in Bellingham and other eastern Mass. towns. Also, papers regarding the town's move to Norfolk County (1793) and incorporation (1824); taxation, with the reasons for complaints about the tax proportions of the town (1774); and a piece of "common land." Among Stephen (1731-1800) Metcalf's legal papers are warrants, depositions, and summonses. (Cont.) Also included are an inventory and estate records of John Metcalf and others; his commonplace-book, with personal accounts; genealogical information on the Metcalf family (added later); a booklet containing the classes, names, and tax proportions resulting from a resolve to raise men and money for the Mass. quota in the Continental Army (1781); and papers related to the establishment of a Boston-Connecticut post road.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. The unit protected Washington, the army's cash, and official papers. ...
