Manuscripts include handwritten notes, holographic notebooks, manuscripts, typescripts, page proofs, author's galleys, clippings, and correspondence pertaining to the principle stages of development of Harrigan's published works. Includes material on Aransas, published in 1980; Jacob's Well, published in 1984; Clements article, published for Texas monthly in May, 1981; Sleepyhead, published in 1980; and the unpublished screenplay titled Moonwalker. Also includes the Dobie Paisano project, Harrigan's application for the Dobie Paisano fellowship. Published works authored by Harrigan include the following: Aransas (New York : Knopf, 1980), the paperback version of Aransas (New York : Avon, 1981), and the soft cover version of Aransas (Austin : Texas Monthly, 1986). Also includes Sleepyhead (Walnut Creek, Ca. : Calliope Press, 1980), a collection of poetry. Two editions of Harrigan's second novel, Jacob's Well (New York : Ballentine, 1985) and (New York : Simon and Schuster, 1984) A Natural State (1988), Water and Light (1992), Gates of the Alamo (2000). Miscellanea include published works not authored by Harrigan. Tinkle's The Alamo (New York : New American Library, 1960) was inscribed by the author for Harrigan. Also includes a manuscript map used by Harrigan in development of the plot for his novel, Jacob's Well.

As a freelance journalist, Stephen Harrigan has written articles for several publications including Rolling stone, The Texas observer and Texas monthly. He received the Dobie Paisano fellowship in 1977 and acted as president of the Texas Institute of Letters from 1985-87. From 1973-78 Harrigan edited a small poetry magazine titled Lucille.
