Journal of Martha Green of Plymouth, Mass., and Concord, N.H., who traveled to China in the clipper ship Surprise, commanded by Charles A. Ranlett, with her sister Mary and brother-in-law Joseph Wingate, the U.S. Consul to Swatow, 1863-1869. The journal describes the sea voyage, a stop in Hong Kong, and daily life in Swatow, including social activities with missionaries and other diplomats stationed there. It also describes several meetings at sea with the ship St. Paul under Capt. Ira Crowell of Cape Cod.
