Journal of a teacher who went from New Hampshire to Virginia, by way of New York City and Philadelphia, to take a position at Matchapungo Academy, Belhaven, Va. Contains descriptions of his trip south by water and rail; social and religious life on the Eastern Shore of Virginia; the treatment of slaves; and the appearance of villages in Virginia. Also describes a visit to Washington, D.C., in 1842, including a view of John Quincy Adams in the House of Representatives and a visit with President Tyler.
