Diaries, 1863-1865.

Includes a description of Cooper's work with the U.S. Engineers in Virginia and Maryland, 1863. Entries concern the movements of Cooper's company and camp life, and comment on the last months of the war when he was stationed in South Carolina. There are few descriptions of military engagements; Fredericksburg is the only battle discussed in detail. Diaries also document African American participation in the Civil War and the movements of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry regiments in S.C.
