The A. Flinn Estate Receipt, December 21, 1822, itemizes moneys paid by Mrs. Eliza Flinn of Charleston, South Carolina, to settle the estate of her husband, Rev. Dr. A. Flinn. Creditors include Dr. Glover, Dr. Irvine, Bonnell and Salter, and John Shriver (Shrivers). Dr. Glover's and Dr. Irvine's bills were for medical attendance to Dr. Flinn and his family.

Matthew Irvine was born in Ireland in 1755 and came to the United States as a young boy to live with his brother in Philadelphia. He fought against the British during the Revolutionary War, serving as a surgeon in the army. He studied medicine before and after the war, though there is no evidence he received a medical degree from a university.
