Stephen G. Burbridge papers, 1863-1864.

Official dispatches which passed through the office of Maj. Gen. Stephen G. Burbridge during part of his period as commander of the District of Kentucky. The messages concern every phase of military life, troop movements, and operations, reflecting Kentucky's strategic role as a shipping point for troops en route to Sherman's command in the Atlanta campaign. Includes much material on the second Morgan raid into Kentucky, and on Nathan Bedford Forrest. Many telegrams relate to civil administration in Kentucky.

Burbridge was born on August 19, 1831 in Georgetown, Kentucky. He attended Georgetown College and the Kentucky Military Institute in Frankfort. Afterward he apprenticed with an established law firm and subsequently became a lawyer. He also had a large plantation.
