Correspondence and other papers of Civil War interest, chiefly in regard to ante-bellum manufacturing and trade, and to clandestine trade carried on between the lines by Northern sympathizers in the South. Some papers tell of the treatment of Barton's father, Stephen Barton, including the destruction of his lumber factory at Bartonsville, N.C., by Union forces and his imprisonment at Norfolk, Va.; of Samuel's efforts to recover damages after the war; of the attitudes of Confederate and Union officers; of certain cavalry raids; and Clara Barton and her family. Correspondents include Clara Barton, Stephen Barton, Elizabeth Benton Frémont, and Ellen Spencer Mussey.
