Merry Lewis Pence papers, 1879-1954.

The Merry Lewis Pence papers contain writings, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other items related to the life and work of Merry L. Pence. Folders 1 and 2 contain a number of letters and writings by Pence. Of note are a series of poems written by Pence and his Davies County Teacher's Certificate. This collection also contains diagrams and documentation related to a patent granted to Pence for a safety gas burner he designed. The majority of the included newspaper clippings are related to Pence's daughter Dr. Sallie Pence. There is one photograph of the 1900 State College of Kentucky faculty. The included manuscript by Pence is a history of the University of Kentucky from 1866-1936. This manuscript was completed only a few weeks before his death in 1938. The Transit Book, 1890 contains field notes that were the basis on which the topographic maps of the University of Kentucky campus were made in 1890.
