Papers relating to Bernard's interest in the Civil War, including excerpts from his diary of 1862 and scrapbooks concerning his service in the 12th Virginia Infantry and other war subjects. Battles described include Seven Pines and Malvern Hill (with maps), Second Manassas, Crampton's Gap, Chancellorsville, Sewell's Point, French's Field, and Frazier's Farm. There are also scrapbooks and loose clippings concerning the Ashley family, William M. Tweed, and Petersburg events; a copy of Bernard's book, "War Talks of Confederate Veterans;" and two pictures, of the gunboat "Mendota" and the Chesterfield Bridge over the North Anna River.
