Letters and documents concerning the activities of the partnership of Barbour and his cousin John W. Sullivan, mostly relating to trade and finance. Places mentioned include Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Iowa, Italy, and South America. There is material concerning the ships and rates of exchange, quality of goods, and economic conditions affecting commerce. W.S. Fitzwilliam is mentioned as the agent between Sullivan and Barbour and the branches of Gower and Co., in London, Trieste, and Genoa. Products are generally agricultural. Beginning in 1837 most papers concern copper claims in the Lake Superior region. There is also some mention of Sullivan's interest in various land companies in the south. Born in Hamilton, New York on April 23, 1814, Bela Hubbard was the son of Thomas H. Hubbard. He came to Detroit in 1835. Bela Hubbard married Sarah E. Baughman of Adrian, Michigan on March 2, 1848. After his admission to the Michigan Bar in 1842, Hubbard practiced law for a time with Charles Collins, but he soon gave up the law to devote his time to real estate. Ellsworth, Henry Leavitt, 1791-1858

Henry Leavitt Ellsworth graduated from Yale in 1810. He studied law at Litchfield Law School, and in 1832 he was appointed Commissioner of Indian tribes in Arkansas and Oklahoma. In 1835, Ellsworth was elected mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, but only served one month. In 1835, he was appointed U.S. Commissioner of Patents, remaining until 1845.
