This collection (1850-1973) contains materials related to Raymond W. Cassady as well as materials on Whiting family history. Materials related to Cassady include correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and his certificate of appointment as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. Records and photographs related to the Walnut Ridge Stock Farm are also included. Materials on Whiting family history consist of photocopies of correspondence, transcribed journal entries, and family histories. Also included are autobiographical accounts by a former slave, Allison J. Criner, who was born on the property of Isaac Criner (father-in-law of C. E. Whiting).

On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law. Raymond Whiting Cassady was born 13 November 1881 near Whiting, Iowa. His parents were E. M. Cassady and Ida N. Whiting. He attended the University of Iowa (1899-1901) and was one of the sophomores who were suspended following the kidnapping of the freshman class president in January 1901.
