Benjamin Gue was born December 25, 1928 on a farm in Green County, New York. His parents, John and Catherine Gurney Gue, were Quakers and Abolitionists. Their home was used as a stop on the underground railroad. When Gue was ten years old, his father died, leaving his mother to raise the children and manage the farm. On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law.
