William Wirt Daugherty letters, 20 December 1863; 27 April 1864.

This collection consists of two letters written by 1st Lieutenant William Daugherty from Tullahoma, Tennessee to his father Joseph in Indianapolis. The letter dated 20 December 1863 discusses personal issues, describes recruiting, Rebel deserters from General Bragg's army, and gives a glimpse of General Grant. The letter dated 27 April 1864 relates the activities of the 27th Indiana. He details their destinations and tells of the high morale of the unit.

William Wirt Daugherty (ca. 1841-ca. 1920s) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. On 19 April 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company G of the 27th Indiana Regiment. He received subsequent promotions to master sergeant in January 1862, 2nd lieutenant in Company I in November 1862, and 1st lieutenant and adjutant of Company H.
