Early in 1948, employees at the Galesburg, Illinois Midwest Manufacturing plant began the process of forming a union and becoming certified under the Labor Relations Management Act of 1947. Later that year, the union was certified as Federal Labor Union Number 22278, American Federation of Labor. The union and Midwest Manufacturing agreed on their first contract for 1954-1955 and agreed to a second contract for 1955-1956.
