Abraham Luke diaries, 1943-1947.

The Abraham Luke Diaries consist of three small memorandum books with daily notes on the author's employment with MHKCB Co. [Metcalf, Hamilton, Kansas City Bridge Company] and subsistence trapping and fishing, as well as events, illnesses, and deaths among the inhabitants of the region around Healy Lake, Alaska. The diaries cover the periods July 1943-May 1944, March-December 1945, and November 1946-1 June 1947. The latter book also includes single entries for 24 December 1947 and 24 August 1959.

Abraham Luke (1912-1991), a Tanana Athapascan, was born at Goodpaster Village, Alaska, and was raised in the Goodpaster and Big Delta areas. In 1933 he married Eva Sam, a Tanacross Athapascan of the Healy Lake area, where the young couple resided up to the early 1940s. During World War II, Luke served in the Army, seeing action in the Aleutian Islands during the Battle of Attu.
