Gideon Shryock collection, 1823-1954.

This collection contains original letters of Gideon Shryock. Also included are clippings, letters, and other writings about Shryock originally compiled in a scrapbook by his niece, Elizabeth Shryock Field. Among the letters by Shryock is a description of the Kentucky capitol written to Robert Scott (1833). Other materials include some poetry by his sister, Sophia Shryock Oliver and letters concerning research on Shryock and his work conducted by Field.

Robert Wilmot Scott, agriculturist, was born in 1808 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He attended Transylvania University and became a lawyer in Frankfort, Kentucky. In the 1830's, Scott abandoned his law practice to become a farmer in Franklin and Woodford Counties. His farm was known as Locust Hill Plantation and he became one of Kentucky's most progressive farmers and livestock breeders. Scott died in 1884 at the home of his son-in-law, S.I.M. Shryock was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1802. His parents were Mathias and Mary Elizabeth Shryock. Gideon Shryock apprenticed with his father, who was a contractor and builder, then studied for a year in Philadelphia with the famous architect, William Strickland. In 1824 Shryock returned to Kentucky and opened an office in Lexington.
