These are papers of George W. Johnson, the first Confederate Provisional Governor of Kentucky. Other persons whose correspondence is present include Johnson's wife, Ann Viley Johnson; his son Junius, who helped build the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad; his two daughters, Eliza Johnson Johnston (Mrs. J. Stoddard Johnston) and Martha Johnson Payne (Mrs. George V. Payne); and Governor Johnson's brother William Henry Johnson, who owned Bell Isle, a plantation in Mississippi.

George W. Johnson was the first Confederate Provisional Governor of Kentucky. He was born near Georgetown, Kentucky in 1811. He received Bachelor's, Master's, and Law degrees from Transylvania University. After his marriage to Ann Viley in 1833, Johnson practiced law in Georgetown. Simon Bolivar Buckner, governor of Kentucky during 1887-91, was born near Munfordville, Kentucky, in 1823, to Aytell Hartswell and Elizabeth Ann Buckner. He entered West Point in 1840 and saw active duty in the Mexican War after graduation. He later became head of Kentucky's state militia, then joined the Confederate Army as brigadier general at the start of the Civil War.
