Biographical note: George M. Chescheir, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, joined the First Kentucky Infantry of the National Guard in 1911. His unit served along the Mexican-American border in 1916. The unit was federalized as the 138th Field Artillery and embarked for France in 1918, but the Armistice was signed prior to any engagement.
