William Gove railroad and lumbering photograph collection.

This collection contains copy photographs, and a few originals, of Vermont railroads, lumbering, and related topics collected by William Gove of Williamstown, Vermont. Mr. Gove used these photographs in the production of a number of books including Vermont's Granite Railroads: The Montpelier & Wells River and the Barre & Chelsea (1985) and Log Drives on the Connecticut River (2003). The collection includes photographs of the lumbering operations of the Connecticut Valley Lumber Company (CVL), International Paper Company, Rich Lumber Company, and others. The collection also includes photographs of mills arranged geographically and by product such as bowls, furniture, and plywood. The collection's railroad photographs are extensive. They are arranged by railroad company, including Bristol Railroad, Central Vermont Railway, Clarendon and Pittsford, Connecticut and Passumpsic, Hardwick and Woodbury, and many others. The collection is particularly strong in photographs of the Montpelier and Wells River Railroad. The collection also includes some non-photographic material consisting of photocopies of printed primary and secondary sources. These materials have been grouped at the end of the collection.
