Includes one of Ely Parker's school essays, "National faith", written 25 Nov. 1847 at Cayuga Academy; diary entries from a trip to Washington, 1-14 Jan. 1847; military dispatches, 4 Aug. 1864-2 Feb. 1865; letters to his brother Nicholson Parker, 5 Sept. 1863-25 Mar. 1868; a view of Indian affairs, from his 1869 annual report as Commissioner of Indian Affairs; and Capt. Samuel H. Beckwith's address at the marking of Parker's grave on 30 May 1905.

Seneca sachem born at Indian Falls, Genesee County, N.Y. in 1828; raised on the Tonawanda Reservation. Studied law and civil engineering; appointed superintendant of government works at Galena, Ill. in 1857, where he became a friend of Ulysses S. Grant. Served during the Civil War as Gen. Arthur C. Parker was born in 1881 on the Cattaraugus Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York in western New York. He was the son of Frederick Ely Parker, who was one-half Seneca, and his wife Geneva Hortenese Griswold, of Scots-English-American descent, who taught school on the reservation.
