Felix Voorhies miscellany, 1859-1965.

Collection is composed of various materials related to the life and work of Felix Voorhies. They include a typewritten copy of the eulogy for Cornelius Voorhies, Felix Voorhies's father, dated 1859; typescripts of historical sketches concerning St. Martin Parish, La., and the Attakapas Country, a region in south Louisiana formerly inhabited by the Attakapas Indians; a letter to the editor of the Sunday states, the Sunday issue of the New Orleans newspaper Daily states, protesting an article concerning Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; a letter from the Tennessee Historical Society, dated 1927, requesting biographical information concerning Voorhies; newspaper clippings of the Voorhies sketches "Sketch of Pilgrimage of Acadian Settlers" and "Bluette", the latter written in French; a program for and newspaper articles publicizing the dedication of a Voorhies monument in Longfellow-Evangeline Memorial Park in St. Martinville, La., on Dec. 5, 1965; and two photographs of Voorhies, one of them used in the creation of the bronze plaque of Voorhies that appears on the St. Martinville monument.

Born in St. Martinville, La., in 1839, Felix Voorhies was a lawyer, politician, and judge who also won fame as an author of songs and short stories and a director of plays and musicals. Following education at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, La., and the College of the Immaculate Conception in New Orleans, Voorhies began a lengthy legal and political career, practicing law from 1860-1912 and serving in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1874-1878...
