Papers, 1764-1816.

The collection contains a few sermons and several lengthy pieces of correspondence. There is a sermon preached in 1791 discussing "Looking unto Jesus ..." and an 1806 sermon preached at New Haven, Conn., concerning the ten commandments. An abstract of an 1816 ordination sermon and address given by Dr. [Calvin?] Chapin in Chatham, Conn., is also included in the collection. The correspondence consists of lengthy theological disputations exchanged between Strong and Samuel Hart (1738-1813) (who writes his name as Samuel Heart), the first clerk and treasurer of the Second Congregational Church in Berlin, Conn., and Jeremiah Day (1737-1806), a minister in New Preston, Conn. These eight epistles, dated 1794 to 1797, discuss the "seed of Abraham," and origins of evil and sin. In addition, there is a 1764 notebook containing extracts from theological journals and musical compositions without lyrics.
