This nineteenth century memorial essay provides an extensive biography of Stockwell, including details of his travels, work, family, and home life. It also discusses his disposition, personality traits, work ethic, politics (Whig then Republican), and views on religion, and includes his thoughts on slavery and temperance. He was "... a great reader..." with his favorite books being Milton's Paradise Lost and Pollock's Course of Time. He also subscribed to the Massachusetts Plowman and the Massachusetts Spy. The volume includes a portrait photograph, as well as an illustration of his headstone. In addition there are autographs and two newsclippings, from the Boston Journal and the Worcester Gazette, announcing his death. There are four letters, 1870 to 1873, written by Stockwell to his son Frank, with news of Hannah's and his own health, as well as family and other news. There is a note, dated 16 February 1881, from M.A.S. (Mary?) with news of her father's health. Finally, there is a Western Union telegram from M.A.S. to F. F. Stockwell of 99 Court St., Boston, announcing Stockwell's death and date of service.

Leonard Mellen Stockwell (1798-1881), the oldest of nine children of Enoch and Nancy (Fechem) Stockwell, was born on 5 August 1798 in Sutton (now Millbury), Mass. In 1828 he married Orilla Sessions (1806-1853), daughter of Ebenezer and Sally Sessions of Union, Conn.
