Papers, 1787-1963.

The collection, which covers the period 1812 to 1963, includes William Battey's financial records from the War of 1812, along with Mathewson-Atwood family memorabilia. William Battey's papers consist of equipment and payroll receipts, recruitment oaths, correspondence, and muster rolls. The recruitment records include a physical description of the recruit and his signed oath of loyalty. In addition to their pay, volunteers were promised government land. Battey's equipment and payroll receipts document his disbursements of national funds. Apparently, meticulous record keeping was required, since his war correspondence chronicles an embezzlement suit the federal government was prosecuting against Battey's recruitment captain, David Bartlett ( - ). The Mathewson-Atwood family memorabilia includes correspondence, a will of Arnold Fenner, Helen and James' wedding invitation, a copy of Dorothy's birth certificate, a deed, and a power of attorney, dated 10 March 1787, of Philip Mathewson (1736-1796), grandfather of Bucklin [see oversize folder], as well as other documents. There are six newsclippings including two obituaries for Helen and one for Helen Baldwin (1865-1946), the daughter of Dr. Elijah and Sarah Mathewson Baldwin. Some of the eight photographs are identified and include a tintype of a young Helen and her father, a photograph of a young Helen, as well as a photograph of Helen holding baby Dorothy (1893). There are also two photographs of wagon wheels that belonged to Jeffrey Mathewson (1761-1833). These wagon wheels were on a wagon that transported canon balls to Valley Forge.
