This collection, compiled by Francis Bulkeley Smith of Worcester, Mass., in the first decade of the twentieth century, consists of copious notes culled from many sources concerning the lives and activities of Edward Bulkeley (1540-1620/21), Peter Bulkeley (1582/83-1658/59), and Gershom Bulkeley (1635/36-1713), and some of their descendants, especially John Bulkeley (1679-1731) and sons Charles Bulkeley (1710-1762) and Peter Bulkeley (1712-1798), as well as Roger Bulkeley (1751-1819). These notes are taken from primary sources like the Colchester, Conn., town and probate records; the Middlesex County, Mass., probate records; Peter Bulkeley manuscripts; the Thomas Prince collection, Cotton Mather's Magnalia Anima Christi, and Hubbard's General History of New England and Indian Wars (edited by Samuel Gardner Drake). Secondary materials include the Massachusetts Historical Society Collections; the New England Historic and Genealogical Society Register; and Justin Winsor's Narrative and Critical History of America, among others. There is much information copied from wills, inventories of estates, deeds, quotations from letters, and contemporary accounts, as well as historical assessments of Peter Bulkeley, some of his forebears, and descendants.
