This volume contains Nathaniel Wood's "Record of Expenses while in College." In addition to his expenses (including travel, tuition, books, and other supplies), Wood's accounts include detailed information about his studies, including subjects and professors, and also summaries of expenditures for his four years at Waterville College. Additionally, there are two pages of expenses at Covington, 1846 to 1847. The volume also contains two lists of books. The first is a "Record of Books read during college course," beginning in 1840 and continued to 1855. (Wood reckoned that in this period he had read three hundred four volumes, or a total of 112,945 pages.) The second list is a "Catalogue of Books" in Wood's library with listings from September 1840 through 1849 totaling two hundred thirty-eight volumes. In the rear of the volume are accounts of "money received," 1844 to 1847 (in Waterville and Covington), and of "money paid out," 1848 to 1849 (in Bloomfield).

N. Milton Wood made his name in Maine as a minister and theologian. His rise to prominence within the Maine Baptist Convention seems to have resulted from his role in theological disputes that had particularly disruptive effects in Waterville, the site of his second pastorate. In Waterville, Wood confronted the challenge of theological disputes with a more senior minister, David N. Sheldon, who had held the Waterville pastorate when Wood was a student.
