Account books, 1739-1749.

This indexed ledger has been attributed to Van Tessel by Victor H. Paltsits (1867-1952), Chief of the American History Division and Keeper of Manuscripts at the New York Public Library (see letter in volume, dated 5 December 1931, citing his reasons). All entries are recorded in Dutch and concern the sale of rum, cider, sugar, salt, buttons, tobacco, and clay pipes. Customers settled their accounts by cash or by produce, such as butter, apples, bacon, and lumber, or by making shoes or performing other labor. Frequently, the proprietor's wife conducted sales transactions, reconciled differences in amounts owed, or received payment on account. Among the store's patrons were Jeremiah Van Rensselaer ( - ), Johannes van der Bergh ( - ), Pieter Schuyler ( - ), Philip Schuyler ( - ), and members of their households. Most accounts had moderate activity but some had only one entry--the balance carried over from an earlier ledger. There are also six items (filed with the volume) containing letter fragments and drafts of a New Year's letter written from the Van Cortlandt manor, Westchester County, N.Y.; one sheet concerning shoemaking and repair; a list of residents of Hoosick, N.Y.; and the Paltsits letter.

1 v. (163 leaves) ; folio.
