This collection contains correspondence and research material, for the period 1847 to 1878, mainly relating to Rodenbough's work on the Foster and Craigie family genealogies. Included are vital family records, a biography of William Foster (1772-1863) of Boston, Mass., letters referring to James Foster ( -1847) and his service in the Navy, a twenty-two page printed article from the _New England Historical and Genealogical Register_, 1877, entitled "Old Cambridge (Mass.) and New," and several letters from Samuel Foster Haven (1806-1881) relative to the Foster genealogy and Cambridge, Mass.

William Foster, Junior, 1777-1863, was the eldest son of William Foster, 1746-1821, merchant of Boston and his wife Grace Spear Foster, 1751-1816. His father sent him to Cadiz, Spain at the age of fourteen to study languages and learn business methods.
