The collection consists primarily of the diaries, sermons, essays, ecclesiastical papers, and correspondence of the Rev. Ebenezer Parkman (1703-1782), pastor of the town of Westborough, Massachusetts, from 1724 to 1782. Also included are papers (mostly correspondence) of other members of his family for the years 1707 to 1829, and some genealogical material on the Parkman family from about 1620 to 1879.

Reverend Ebenezer Parkman was born in 1703 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of William and Elizabeth (Adams) Parkman. He graduated from Harvard College in 1703 and received his M.A. in 1724. In 1722, he began to preach, and in 1724, he and Jacob Eliot, a graduate of Harvard in 1723, were chosen by the Westborough town meeting as candidates to become the town’s first minister. Ebenezer Parkman, son of William Parkman, a shipwright, was born in Boston on September 5, 1703. Eli Forbes (1726-1804) was born Eli Forbush in Westborough, Mass., and changed his name during the French and Indian War when a Scottish officer convinced him he was spelling it wrong. He was a pupil of Ebenezer Parkman (1703-1782) and later married Parkman's daughter, Mary (1725-1776). He graduated from Harvard in 1751.
